If you live in jeans or business clothes during the day then updating your outfit for the evening can be a challenge. Here’s how to make the glam look work without going overboard.
Dress for your body type: More important than following the latest fashions is identifying your own body type and knowing what suits it best. As a general rule, pear shapes should emphasise the bust and waist area with outfits that skim over the lower part of the body, while slender figures can create the illusion of curves with a low-cut neckline and jacked-in waist. Petite girls should avoid long evening dresses in favour of shorter cocktail numbers, but if you’re tall then you should be able to pull off one of this season’s stunning floaty maxi dresses.

The weather might not be able to make up its mind – is summer just around the corner or is winter still trying to hold us in its clutches? – but the fashion world has definitely made some strong decisions about this summer’s trends. Sure to be one of the most popular, thanks not just to summery colours and feminine shapes but also to our love of all things vintage, is the retro 1950s look. Belted waists, capped sleeves, sweetheart and square necklines, midi skirts, pleats, pastel shades, low-heeled strappy sandals and florals – this is a look that just begs to be tried. If you want styling inspiration look no further than Grease, the movie that girls in their twenties and thirties grew up with.

Jasper Garvida's collection at London Fashion Week was welcomed with rounds of applause. The FashionThirst crew sat in eager but patient mode in the Bloomsbury Hotel's grand ballroom, it was certainly packed and full to the brim with bloggers, stylists, designers, fashion PR gurus and fashion students respectively. I was trying to work out if Garvida was a Castellano Spanish surname or Portuguese; it turns out that Jasper is Philippino but grew up in Canada. He moved to London to study at St Martin's and hasn't looked back since. Sometimes you just need to take a leap of faith.
