The recent MTV VMA awards at LA's Microsoft Theatre in the Staples centre was fraught with outlandish and excessive celeb statements or standoffs. Nicki Minaj giving Miley Cyrus a piece of her mind, Justin Bieber tears and Kanye announcing his presidential aims had trending feeds going through the roof. Nominees dressed in iconic outfits for an epic night but interestingly some of us were drawn to the more discreet, subdued and understated artists who didn't feel the need to create a spectacle at each opportune moment. The cool and calm persona was the exact energy that we were looking for on the night. Gorgeous heart-throb Miguel turned up with his girlfriend Nazanin Mandi and presented along side hottest model on the circuit right now - Gigi Hadid. Sporting his trademark designer stubble, fun ripped jeans, a sleek white cotton shirt flashing a bit of chest and a silky, patterned, olive blaser he summed up the epitome of cool. A cross between a Jimi Hendrix and a Prince type of cool.
Amber Rose and Black Chyna's outfits were an example of Artivism; using fashion to convey a message about slut-shaming and the double standards in the Entertainment industry. Amber's message is based on the fact that women aren't allowed to be sexual beings to the fullest there are boundaries which are set mainly by men in the industry. Women shouldn't be afraid to express their sexuality, why must we hide it and be ashamed of something so natural ? Sex isn't bad. Their outfits were covered in many derogatory adjectives and words used for women.
West London girl Rita Ora sported a long blond ponytail, a low-cut black feathered gown with heavy eye make-up. We loved her criss cross pointy stilletos. This Kosovan female refugee (migrant as some prefer to say) speaks fluent Albanian, she continues to strive to create life success beyond her difficult past. Her family fled the Milosevic regime in the late 90s. Rita is proof of how refugees add value to their new host countries.
The VMA lived up to its name, until next year keep voting for those vids!
The Billboard award is an honour given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business. This year's winners were Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber and our very own Brit Sam Smith. Sam scooped up an award on Sunday night for 'top new artist'. Sam Smith's chart topping song was introduced to me by my friend's 85 year old grandmother earlier this year, Grandma insisted that the song was on repeat, whilst we sat out on her veranda in the Caribbean. I've also read an article about him discussing his inspirations, his father, on coming out as a gay man and his favourite albums. He's an interesting dude.
This Las Vegas-based high profile event at the Grand Garden arena attracted talented artists, entertainers, stars and models from around the world and of course when they are in town out comes the red carpet and the stunning gowns.
H & M model Lily Aldridge from Cali wore a see-through Balmain magenta and black pleated skirt, black top and striking Gold wrist cuffs by designer Jennifer Fisher she teamed it up with an ever so cute Eddie Parker clutch bag. Lily's Guiseppe Zanotti shoes were impeccable and so is her perfectly symmetrical face, nude lips, work well on Lily they accentuate her high cheek bones and facial contours. Lily's Papa is English and is from North London.
Bronx pop diva Jennifer Lopez, now 45 (but age defying !) arrived in a daring, curve-hugging semi-sheer dress which showed off her washboard stomach and a glimpse of her cleavage. The nearly nude, beaded gown with crystal appliqués was chosen by her stylist Mariel Haenn. Her brown smoky eye make-up and creamy blush complimented her new highlights. Some say she didn't wear knickers (panties/underwear) on the night I suppose only young Casper will know if she did or not (grin).
Rita Ora who hails from West London stepped out in a white cut-out Fausto Puglisi dress, some fashion bloggers called it a white wash. Her gown had large gold details, again no underwear worn on the night; funny how these things become the 'norm' over time. Her dress kept flying open with the wind. She adorned herself with Jennifer Fisher jewels, the slit in the dress looked sultry. We loved her shoes and her trademark poppy red lip colour. Still unsure about the platinum locks.
